About Heritage South

We got our start in 1957 as EPCO Credit Union, serving employees of Empire Pencil Company in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

As we grew, so did the community we could serve. We became Heritage South Community Credit Union in 2006 and received our community charter that same year.

Today, we continue to be locally owned by our members and focused on helping the communities we call home.

You can join if you live, work, worship, or attend school in:

  • Bedford County
  • Marshall County
  • Rutherford County
  • Cannon County
  • Maury County
  • Tullahoma
  • Manchester
  • Winchester
  • Decherd
  • Fayetteville

Immediate family members of current members may also qualify.

To become a member, you’ll pay a one-time $1 membership fee and deposit at least $5 into a share savings account. Keep at least $5 in that account to maintain your membership.

When you join a credit union, you become a member-owner rather than simply an account holder.

At Heritage South, every member has one vote when electing our board, regardless of how much money you have on deposit. Because we’re a not-for-profit financial cooperative, our focus stays on serving members and the local community.

A credit union is owned by its members and operates as a not-for-profit cooperative.

When you join Heritage South, your $5 share savings deposit represents your ownership in the credit union. You have a voice in electing our volunteer board and share in the benefits of a locally owned organization.

Yes. Your eligible deposits are federally insured through the National Credit Union Administration’s National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund.

Individual accounts are generally insured up to $250,000, with separate coverage available for certain ownership categories, including joint and eligible retirement accounts.

Accounts & Cards

Either option still uses money from your checking account.

Choosing debit generally requires your PIN and may allow you to request cash back at participating merchants. Choosing credit processes the purchase through the Visa network and may not require a PIN.

Your Visa Debit Card is not turned into a credit card when you choose “credit,” and the purchase is still deducted from your checking account.

A Christmas Club account gives you a separate place to save for holiday expenses throughout the year.

Add money whenever it works for you or set up automatic transfers. Around the middle of October, your Christmas Club balance automatically transfers into your savings or checking account so it’s ready for the holiday season.

If you’re already a member, you can open a Christmas Club account through your secure online account or the Heritage South app.

Loans & Credit

It can.

When you co-sign, you take on responsibility for repaying the loan if the primary borrower does not. The loan may appear on your credit report, and missed or late payments may affect your credit as well as the primary borrower’s.

Before you co-sign, make sure you understand the loan terms and could comfortably make the payments yourself if needed.

Contact us as soon as you know you’re having trouble making a payment.

The sooner we understand what’s happening, the sooner we can talk through the options that may be available. A qualifying Heritage South loan may be eligible for our Skip-A-Payment program, which moves an eligible skipped payment to the end of the loan.

Fees, interest, eligibility requirements, and other restrictions apply.

Mortgages & Home Loans

There isn’t one down-payment amount that works for everyone.

A larger down payment can reduce the amount you need to borrow and may lower some loan costs, but you’ll also want to leave enough room in your budget for closing costs, moving expenses, repairs, and savings.

Talk with our mortgage team about your budget and available loan options before deciding how much to put down.

Refinancing may be worth exploring when you want to change your rate, monthly payment, loan term, or other mortgage terms.

Compare more than the monthly payment. A refinance comes with its own costs, and extending your loan term can lower your payment while increasing the amount you pay over time.

We can help you compare your current mortgage with the options available today so you can decide whether refinancing makes sense for you.

Yes. Secondary market mortgage options may be available for eligible home purchases in all 50 states.

Talk with our mortgage team about where you plan to buy and which options may be available to you.
