  2. Who We Are

Local from the very beginning

We’ve been helping our neighbors since 1957.

We Help When Others Won’t

It’s more than something we say. It comes from the stories our members have shared about the times we listened, looked at the whole picture, and helped them find a way forward.

We’re a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by the people we serve. That means our focus stays where it belongs: on our members and the communities we call home.

When you join Heritage South, you become more than an account holder. You become a member and part-owner, with an equal voice in electing our volunteer board.

Local at Heart

Our roots are here in Middle Tennessee. The people answering your calls, making decisions, and serving on our board live and work in the communities we serve.

Here to Listen

Real life doesn’t always fit neatly into a box. We take the time to hear your story, understand what you need, and help you find the next step when we can.

From a pencil factory to communities across Middle Tennessee

Our story started small, and close to home.

1957

Where it all began
Employees of Empire Pencil Company in Shelbyville started EPCO Credit Union with just 10–15 charter members and an office at the factory.

Growing beyond the factory
EPCO began welcoming additional member groups and expanded its reach through mergers that brought us into Lewisburg and Murfreesboro.

2006

Heritage South is born
After receiving a community charter, EPCO became Heritage South Community Credit Union and opened membership more broadly across the communities we served.

Murfreesboro Expansion

2023

More communities, same roots
Our field of membership expanded again, allowing us to serve even more people throughout Middle Tennessee.

Through every stage of that growth, one thing has stayed the same: we’re here to serve the people who call this place home.

When our community grows stronger, we do too

Being local means more than having an office nearby. It means showing up for the communities that have supported us from the beginning. We’re proud to support local programs and organizations working in areas such as youth activities, education and financial literacy, veterans and military initiatives, child and family welfare, community programs, and more.
