How to Teach Kids about Money
It’s never too early to start teaching children about money. Simple lessons at home can help kids develop healthy financial habits that can last a lifetime.
Start With the Basics
- Explain where money comes from: Help children understand that money comes from work and can pay for needs, wants, and savings.
- Make saving fun: Give kids a savings goal, such as a toy, game, or special activity. Seeing their savings grow can make saving more exciting.
- Teach needs vs. wants: When shopping, talk about the difference between things we need and things we’d simply like to have.
- Introduce budgeting: Give older children a small amount of money and let them decide how much to spend, save, or give.
- Lead by example: Kids learn a lot by watching the adults around them. Talk openly about everyday financial decisions and explain why you’re making them.
Make Money Lessons Part of Everyday Life
You don’t need complicated lessons or worksheets to teach kids about money. Grocery shopping, saving for a family activity, or setting aside part of an allowance can all become learning opportunities.
The goal isn’t to teach kids everything about money at once. It’s to help them build good habits one lesson at a time.
Start small, keep it simple, and make learning about money part of everyday life.
