Good Debt vs. Bad Debt

Budgeting

Good Debt vs. Bad Debt: What’s the Difference?

Not all debt is created equal. Borrowing money can be a useful financial tool, but it’s important to understand how debt fits into your overall financial goals.

What Is “Good” Debt?

Good debt is generally debt that can help you build financial stability or provide value over time. Examples may include:

  • A mortgage: Buying a home can help you build equity over time.
  • Student loans: Education may help increase your earning potential.
  • An auto loan: A vehicle may be necessary for work and everyday life.

The key is borrowing an amount you can comfortably afford to repay.

What Is “Bad” Debt?

Bad debt generally refers to borrowing that doesn’t provide lasting value and may become difficult to repay. Examples can include:

  • Carrying high-interest credit card balances
  • Borrowing for unnecessary purchases you can’t afford
  • Taking on more debt than your budget can handle

High interest rates can cause balances to grow quickly, making it harder to get ahead.

It’s All About How You Use Debt

Even “good” debt can become a problem if you borrow more than you can afford. Before taking on new debt, consider the interest rate, monthly payment, total cost, and how the loan fits into your budget.

The goal isn’t necessarily to avoid all debt; it’s to use credit wisely and borrow with a plan.
